No visit to Iceland is complete without exploring the country’s most famous sightseeing route – the Golden Circle. This classic journey showcases some of Iceland’s most iconic natural and historical attractions, making it the perfect introduction to the land of fire and ice, especially for first-time visitors.

When people imagine Iceland, they often picture dramatic waterfalls, erupting geysers, and breathtaking landscapes. The Golden Circle brings all of these wonders together in one unforgettable experience, taking you to three of the country’s most celebrated sites: Þingvellir National Park, Gullfoss Waterfall, and the Geysir Geothermal Area.

Your journey begins at Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Iceland’s most significant historical landmarks. Here, you can witness the remarkable rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, which continue to slowly drift apart. Þingvellir is also the birthplace of Icelandic democracy, as the site of Alþingi, the world’s oldest continuously operating parliament, founded in 930 AD.

Next, continue to the spectacular Gullfoss Waterfall, often referred to as the “Golden Falls.” Fed by the glacial river Hvítá, the waterfall cascades in two dramatic stages before plunging into a rugged 32-meter-deep canyon. The power and beauty of Gullfoss make it one of Iceland’s most beloved natural attractions, offering unforgettable views and excellent photo opportunities.

The final highlight of the route is the Geysir Geothermal Area, where the Earth’s geothermal energy is on full display. While the original Great Geysir is largely dormant today, its neighbor Strokkur erupts regularly every 4–8 minutes, sending a powerful jet of boiling water up to 30 meters into the air. Surrounded by bubbling hot springs, steaming vents, and colorful mineral deposits, the area provides a fascinating glimpse into Iceland’s volcanic nature.

Combining spectacular scenery, geological wonders, and centuries of history, the Golden Circle offers an unforgettable journey through some of Iceland’s most extraordinary landscapes and remains one of the country’s must-see experiences.
